Este libro de prácticas pretende ser un texto que sirva de guía a los alumnos que comienzan a iniciarse en las pruebas encaminadas a obtener el estado refractivo, acomodativo y binocular de un paciente. No podemos tomar el ojo como elemento independiente ya que en nuestro sistema visual es esencial la binocularidad. Además de posibles diferencias inter-ojo, por refracción básica, por ametropías como la hipermetropía, miopía o astigmatismo, pueden existir otras por tamaño, longitud, tapiz retiniano, estimulación macular, conexión muscular y nerviosa. Cualquier objeto tiene que poder ser enfocado de forma eficaz, proporcionando una imagen nítida por acción del sistema acomodativo. Esta condición tiene importante influencia en la activación permanente de los elementos particulares de cada ojo. Además, ambos elementos deben combinarse gracias a la musculatura extrínseca, de modo que si no existe un funcionamiento adecuado de dicha musculatura se hace imposible la visión binocular. La convergencia hace las funciones de asociar ambas imágenes y lograr su fusión cortical gracias a la información transmitida por los axones correspondientes, el cerebro organiza esa información.
