Le 3 avril 1984, une semaine après la disparition du président Ahmed Sékou Touré, l’armée s’empara du pouvoir en Guinée. Placé à la tête du pays par ses pairs, le colonel Lansana Conté apparut comme le symbole d’une Guinée nouvelle débarrassée des tares et des excès du régime précédent. Cependant des contradictions internes éclatèrent très rapidement au sein de la nouvelle équipe dirigeante. Elles atteignirent leur point d’orgue le 4 juillet 1985 lors de la tentative de coup d’État perpétrée par le colonel Diarra Traoré. Mais l’échec fut cuisant et les représailles impitoyables. Diarra Traoré y perdit la vie en même temps que la quasi-totalité des officiers supérieurs de son ethnie. Avaient-ils tous été ses complices dans son ambition de se hisser à la première place occupée par Lansana Conté ? Comment expliquer la violence d’État et la férocité qui s’est abattue sur l’ensemble des membres de l’ethnie du colonel putschiste ?
