Olivia Ramirez is nervous about the first day of middle school, but feels certain there is one final adventure to be had on the last day of summer vacation. Olivia is drawn to her neighborhood park where she meets Lori Murray, an unusual but charming blue-haired girl who has just moved to town. Even though Lori wants to be an astronaut and Olivia longs to explore the world beneath the sea, the two quickly become best friends. As they begin the year at their new school, Olivia and her friends must deal with mean comments from the other students simply because they look different. Eventually, the girls confront Brittany Hobbes, the leader of the school’s popular clique, but the bullying continues even as Olivia attempts to become Brittany’s friend. As more confrontations with the clique occur, Olivia begins to question her own beliefs, ultimately realizing that what makes her and her friends different also makes them unique. As Olivia continues on her roller coaster ride through her first year of middle school, she learns a valuable lesson about what truly brings friends together ... forever.
