As protagonistas muçulmanas dos romances selecionados, Aisha (1983), de Ahdaf Souif, Reading Lolita in Tehran (2003), de Azar Nafisi, Brick Lane (2004), de Monica Aly, e The Girl in Tangerine Scarf (2006), de Mohja Kahf, passaram pelas mesmas circunstâncias nas diferentes comunidades para onde se mudaram. Os romances mostram os sofrimentos que as mulheres enfrentam nas suas vidas, especialmente por parte dos personagens masculinos que as rodeiam. Todas as mulheres nos romances têm gritos reprimidos que precisam de ser libertados, mas são incapazes de o fazer devido à opressão que lhes é imposta. Lutam ao longo das suas vidas pela sua emancipação, seja nos seus países nativos ou quando imigram para outros países. Parecem estar expostas aos mesmos problemas que enfrentam. Todas as personagens femininas são como pássaros enjaulados, esperando ansiosamente pela sua emancipação para o vasto espaço, para encher o universo com os seus gritos de alegria; caso contrário, nas suas gaiolas, elas simplesmente morrem em silêncio.
