Grey Roses is a novel written by Henry Harland and published in 1906. The story follows the life of a young woman named Zlie de Chaumet, who is the daughter of a French aristocrat. Zlie is beautiful and intelligent, but she is also unconventional and rebellious, which causes her to clash with her father and other members of high society. When Zlie falls in love with a young American artist named John Cumnor, her father disapproves and tries to break up the relationship. Despite this, Zlie and John continue to see each other in secret and eventually decide to elope to America.Once in America, Zlie and John struggle to make a life for themselves, facing financial difficulties and social ostracism. However, their love for each other remains strong, and they continue to support each other through the challenges they face.Grey Roses is a story about love, sacrifice, and the struggle to find one’s place in the world. It explores themes of class, tradition, and the clash between old and new ways of thinking.
