The child who is too fat, too thin, awkward, shy, or 'different' in some other way can feel friendless. One so self-conscious or alone would certainly want to have a friend who feels nothing but admiration, even protection, for this classmate. Such is the case with Roxanne and Floyd. She is an only child showered with wealth, luxury, and certainly everything she wants to eat. Floyd comes from a home so poverty-stricken that there often is not enough to eat or proper clothes for school. He admires Roxanne’s doll-like appearance and frilly silk clothes. She admires his quick-thinking bravery and never-failing laughter. These emotions come into play when their small school goes on a violet-gathering field trip and all sorts of pandemonium break loose.
