Wątroba jest również jednym z niewielu organów, które szybko regenerują się po urazach lub częściowym usunięciu. Wątroba jest organem znajdującym się pod przeponą w prawej górnej części brzucha. Wątroba jest największą z ludzkich trzewi (2% masy ciała u dorosłych lub średnio 1,5 kg).Wątroba może być postrzegana jako fabryka chemiczna, która przetwarza, przekształca i eliminuje różne substancje. Odgrywa ważną rolę w regulacji poziomu glukozy we krwi (cukru), jak również w metabolizmie tłuszczów, białek, czynników krzepnięcia krwi i niektórych leków.Wątroba syntetyzuje i wydziela wiele substancji, w tym żółć i bilirubinę. Bile, zielonkawy płyn, jest niezbędny do wchłaniania tłuszczów i niektórych witamin.
