Um novo fenómeno parece estar a surgir em África, no qual partidos políticos rivais se unem após eleições disputadas para formar governos inclusivos durante o período de transição até à implementação de reformas políticas estruturais. O Quénia e o Zimbábue ilustram esta tendência emergente, após a implementação de acordos de partilha de poder em 2008 e 2009, respetivamente. Com quase todos os acordos anteriores de partilha de poder a terminarem em conflito, os argumentos sobre a partilha de poder pós-eleitoral continuam centrados na importância de preservar a paz para o bem maior da nação e nas contribuições presumidas destes acordos para a consecução dos objetivos dos partidos e o avanço da democracia. Embora não haja dúvida de que a unidade efetiva é desejável em ambos os países, é realmente importante determinar quais tendências estes novos acordos estabelecem para a política e o desenvolvimento africanos; especialmente nos casos do Quénia e do Zimbábue, onde a recente violência pós-eleitoral suscitou preocupações sobre a corrosão da democracia tal como a conhecemos. O objetivo desta investigação é contribuir para o campo emergente e controverso da política de partilha de poder em toda a África.
