Gossip About Dr. Johnson and Others

'Gossip About Dr. Johnson and Others' is an engaging and insightful collection of anecdotes and historical observations centered on one of English literature’s most formidable figures. Written by Francis Henry Skrine, this work provides a lively window into the social and intellectual circles of 18th-century England, focusing on the legendary Dr. Samuel Johnson and the illustrious circle of friends that surrounded him. Rather than a formal, chronological biography, the book offers a more intimate look at the personalities that defined an era. Through a series of sketches and accounts, Skrine explores the wit, eccentricities, and profound wisdom of Dr. Johnson, while also providing glimpses into the lives of other prominent figures of the time. The text captures the essence of the literary salons and coffee-house culture where Johnson’s conversational prowess was most celebrated. Readers will find a wealth of historical detail regarding the members of 'The Club' and the broader social fabric of the Georgian period. By synthesizing various accounts and personal histories, Skrine provides a narrative that is both educational and entertaining, making the world of Dr. Johnson accessible to those interested in the art of conversation and the history of British letters. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
