Good Indian is a novel written by B. M. Bower. The story is set in the Western United States during the early 1900s and follows the life of a young Indian man named David, who is also known as ''the Good Indian''. David is a member of the Klamath tribe and is known for his honesty, integrity, and bravery. The story begins with David’s encounter with a group of white settlers who are planning to take over the land that his tribe has lived on for generations. David tries to negotiate with the settlers, but they refuse to listen to him and continue with their plans. This leads to a conflict between the two groups, and David finds himself torn between his loyalty to his tribe and his desire for peace. As the story progresses, David becomes involved in a love triangle with two women - a white woman named Genevieve and a Native American woman named Nat-u-ritch. David’s relationship with Genevieve is complicated by the fact that she is engaged to a wealthy white man, while his relationship with Nat-u-ritch is complicated by the fact that she is already married.Throughout the novel, David is forced to confront the prejudices and injustices that Native Americans face in the United States. He also struggles to reconcile his own identity as a Native American with the expectations and values of the white society around him.Good Indian is a powerful exploration of race, identity, and love in the American West. Bower’s vivid descriptions of the landscape and characters bring the story to life and make it a compelling read for anyone interested in the history and culture of the Western United States. There is a saying--and if it is not purely Western, it is at least purely American--that the only good Indian is a dead Indian. In the very teeth of that, and in spite of tho fact that he was neither very good, nor an Indian--nor in any sense ''dead''-- men called Grant Imsen ''Good Indian'' to his face; and if he resented the title, his resentment was never made manifest--perhaps because he had grown up with the name. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
