Goethe and Schiller’s Xenions is a collection of epigrams and satirical poems written by the two German literary giants, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. First published in 1797, the Xenions were a collaborative effort between the two writers, who exchanged witty and often scathing verses in response to each other’s work. The poems cover a wide range of topics, from politics and society to art and literature, and offer a glimpse into the intellectual and cultural climate of late 18th-century Germany. This edition of the Xenions, published in 1896, features an introduction by the editor, as well as notes and commentary on the poems themselves. It is a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of German literature and culture, as well as anyone interested in the history of satire and epigrammatic poetry. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
