THE MEMBERS OF THE NEW CONFEDERACY OF KINGS MOUNTAIN, KENTUCKY, BELIEVE THE GODDESS CAN SAVE THEM FROM THEIR SINS AND A FIERY DEATH. EVERYTHING IS GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN UNTIL DONNY WHITE LOSES THE ODD POSTCARD HE’S BEEN ENTRUSTED TO DESTROY.Marcel Sutherland, president and half owner of a clothing business, hires Sophie and Armand Renwick at the request of their wealthy father, who’s in the horseracing business. Checking the family background, Marcel learns the money was inherited by Whit’s wife, Nanette, and stumbles across evidence that she had a daughter who was kidnapped. Brock Skinner, Marcel’s brother-in-law and owner of the other half of the clothing company, hears about the missing child and won’t rest until he locates her.Birdy and Cornelius Carr, acquaintances of the Renwicks, are also wealthy. Their son, Cooper Carr, has his own business hauling thoroughbreds, and regularly plays poker with Donny White on Wednesday nights. Cooper was paid well to drive vegetables to market for the New Confederacy, and after White turns up dead, becomes enamored of the goddess. Cooper’s older sister, Diamond, is a wild child, but Cooper keeps his relationship with the goddess a secret, until he takes an interest in Sophie Renwick...Why’d the goddess name the cult she founded New Confederacy? What’s her game?
