Globalny system pozycjonowania (GPS) to sieć satelitów i urządzeń odbiorczych, które służą do wykrywania położenia obiektów na Ziemi. Niektóre odbiorniki GPS są tak precyzyjne, że mogą określić swoją lokalizację z dokładnością do jednego milimetra (0,4 cala). Odbiorniki GPS oferują informacje o szerokości, długości i wysokości geograficznej. GPS to sieć ponad 30 satelitów nawigacyjnych krążących wokół Ziemi. Wiemy, gdzie się znajdują, ponieważ cały czas wysyłają sygnały. Sygnały te są wykrywane przez odbiornik GPS w telefonie. Gdy odbiornik obliczy odległość od czterech lub więcej satelitów GPS, może określić lokalizację użytkownika. Systemy wczesnego ostrzegania przed suszą korzystają z ulepszonych danych klimatycznych, monitorowania wilgotności gleby, monitorowania poziomu jezior i zbiorników, wzrostu roślinności i monitorowania stresu roślin. Podstawową różnicą między GPS i GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) jest to, że sprzęt kompatybilny z GNSS może korzystać z satelitów nawigacyjnych z sieci innych niż system GPS, a więcej satelitów oznacza większą dokładność i niezawodność odbiornika. Podsumowując, GPS i GNSS są używane w GPNSS (Global Positioning Navigation Satellite Systems).
