Responding to the ’cultural turn’ in the social sciences, this volume broadens the study of traditional political economy by examining African cultural production and socio-cultural processes as they intersect with globalization and its economic and political consequences. Chapters focus especially on socio-cultural processes in the domains of sexuality, religion, and media. Topics examined include: debates concerning politics of language in East Africa, processes that are reconfiguring sexual identities among Ghanaian youth in the age of the internet, the emergence of new Christian geographies in Africa, historical and contemporary Islamic movements in Senegal, politics of HIV/AIDs and global health strategies in Uganda, the globalization of Hip Hop, and other timely scholarly debates.
