Die Fortschritte in der Raumfahrttechnologie haben es heute möglich gemacht, zuverlässige und kostengünstige Techniken zur Erkundung des Grundwassers zu erforschen, im Gegensatz zu den schwerfälligen konventionellen Methoden vor Ort. Die Integration von geografischen Informationssystemen (GIS) mit Fernerkundungsdaten unter Verwendung der analytischen Hierarchieprozedur (AHP) ermöglicht eine einheitliche Beurteilung und vereinfacht die Bewertung der verschiedenen Faktoren, die das Grundwasservorkommen steuern, inmitten der Entscheidungskriterien. Auf diese Weise lassen sich Zonen der Grundwasserprospektion abgrenzen. Die Prospektivitätszonen helfen den Wasserbehörden und -managern, eine effektive Strategie zur Bewirtschaftung der Wasserressourcen auf regionaler Basis schneller und kostengünstiger zu entwickeln.
