The Chinese wuxia pian - or swordplay film - genre has been popular all over the world for decades. However, the genre has not been considered worthy of much scholarly study because wuxia pian is often dismissed as a 'B-movie' genre. over the years, the wuxia pian evolved from King Hu’s more historical films to the fantasy/horror/swordplay films of Tsui Hark and other Hong Kong directors. The genre also engendered the kung fu films for which Bruce Lee was famous as well as the comedic films of Jackie Chan. Although Lee’s kung fu films and Chan’s action films have developed into genres all their own, they remain closely related genres to the wuxia pian. This book focuses on the nuxia pian, a genre of the wuxia pian, which features women in lead roles as the martial arts/swordplay experts. in these films, women are no longer damsels in distress; nor are they pining away for a man to fulfill their lives. These nuxia - women warriors - defend themselves and their families, and uphold honor and dignity.
