Als sein grösstes Werk gilt das Dekameron (1353), mit dem er die Novellistik auf die Ebene der Kunstgattung erhob und das eine Ansammlung von 100 Novellen darstellt, die in einer geschlossenen Rahmenhandlung eingebunden sind. Heute wird Boccaccios Novellensammlung, die erstmals den irdischen Menschen und seine Lebenskrisen zum Thema der Literatur machte, als erstes resp. bestes Prosastück der Renaissanceliteratur bezeichnet und ist von grösster sprach- und literaturhistorischer Bedeutung. Die Liste der grossen, namenhaften Schriftsteller, die Boccaccios Meisterwerk zum Vorbild nahmen, d.h. seine Quellen und Strukturvorlagen für ihre eigenen Erzählungen nutzten, ist lang und liest sich wie das literarische Erfolgsrezept der letzten Jahrhunderte. Das Abstrakt bietet einen Überblick über die Epoche und das Leben des Verfassers, über Form, Inhalt und Aussagen des Dekamerons sowie über seine Wirkungsgeschichte.
