In Gina Park Comes to America Dorothy Hong offers fictional account of adventures of Gina Park, a Korean girl. In the three cartoons we see Gina growing up from a small child to a junior high school girl. These cartoons give a glimpse of Gina’s courageous and friendly character, mixed with playfulness. The first cartoon is about what happened after playing hide and seek in Korea, the second is a trip to her grandmother’s and the third is a trip to Finger Lakes to have a picnic with her mother. The fourth illustrated short story is a fictional account of young woman named Carol whose romance with a man outside her race had gone awry. These narratives about human foibles are punctuated by beautiful illustrations. All characters in Dorothy Hong’s stories are fictional creations and any resemblance to anyone is purely coincidental.
