Kenny Knight’s fourth collection was written between 2020 and 2022, a time when ordinary towns frequently resembled ghost towns, the author’s native Plymouth being no different from anywhere else in this regard. His surreal mix of deadpan narrative, skewed memory and keen observation - the latter made poignant by the great deterioration in the author’s sight over recent years - is sui generis. For the reader, it’s a delightful road to be on, and Kenny Knight the ideal travel companion.Comments on the author’s previous collection:'This is a stunning collection. These long poems stay with me, like nothing since I read, by accident years ago, the poems of Jaroslav Seifert. They have a similar mixture of close intimacy and expansive mapping; at times they are tied to very specific places and yet they always exceed them, push at their edges, and at the edges of the people inside their lines; these are poems about travel and dreams of journeys never taken, of girlfriends never met, of the zone between parting and changing, loss and seeing anew.'  -Phil Smith, International Times'It’s a fine line, isn’t it, the ’I’ in poetry informing or engaging or alienating the reader? Too much and there is a self-indulgence, obviously. I think Knight presents the perfect balance because there is in this collection its seamless thread of the apparently real and the delightfully imaginative refraction of this.'  -Mike Ferguson, International TimesCover: ’Prairie Ghost Town’, Canada, copyright © ImagineGolf, 2013.

    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

’When I write I take things from everywhere / like a magpie and twist them.’The lyrical verve, wit and tenderness of Love Letter to an Imaginary Girlfriend are signature qualities of Kenny Knight’s poetry. He writes about lived experiences noticeably free of the self-important theorising in plentiful supply elsewhere in the House of Poesy. This does not indicate any sort of aba...

Kenny Knight’s second collection offers more explorations of his Plymouth childhood and the absurdities, as well as the joys, of his adult years. He is still amazed by the fact that Lobsang Rampa was a plumber from Plympton, by the roster of bands he saw at the fabled Van Dike Club, and by the vibrancy of the more recent local literary scene. The author’s keen eye and gentle, d...
