Selen und selenorganische Verbindungen finden in den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen der Wissenschaft und Technik Anwendung. Viele klassische Verfahren zur Umwandlung von Selen und seinen Verbindungen dauern lange (4-6 Stunden). Eine sehr effektive Methode der „grünen Chemie' ist die organische Synthese unter Mikrowellenaktivierung, die in vielen Fällen eine erhebliche Verkürzung der Reaktionszeit und in einigen Fällen sogar den Verzicht auf Lösungsmittel ermöglicht. Das Buch befasst sich mit einer umweltfreundlichen Kette aufeinanderfolgender Umwandlungen von unreinem Selen in hochreines Selendioxid, weiter in Selensäureether und der anschließenden Regeneration von hochreinem Selen unter Mikrowellenaktivierung.
