Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, has an estimated population of 4 million. Autonomous sanitation is 95% dominant. In 2004, responsibility for community wastewater treatment was transferred to the Yaoundé Urban Community (CUY). In 2015, the CUY updated its wastewater sanitation master plan with a strategy calling for a switch from on-site to collective sanitation by 2035, but no funding has been found for its implementation. Before 2016, CUY did not deal with GBV. In 2016, the CUY benefited from capacity-building and benchmarking through RASOP, which led to: (i) the authorities becoming more aware of the GBV issue and (ii) obtaining funding from the AIMF in the amount of 2.7 million euros to build the first STBV. The lessons learned from the various exchanges are: (i) the importance of developing skills in the sector, both at the level of private partners and municipal services (ii) the strengthening of peer-to-peer exchanges facilitated by RASOP.
