'GET THEM BABIES OUT THE STREET' IS MORE THAN JUST A COLLECTION OF POETRY PIECES, THIS BOOK DEFINES THE LIFE AND TIMES, ALSO THE STRUGGLES OF AFRIKAN AMERICANS. IT IS A CRY FROM EVERY PROJECT BUILDING, A CALL FROM EVERY CONCRETE JUNGLE AND HALLS OF EVERY JUDICIAL SYSTEM. THE STRUGGLE HAS A VOICE, A VOICE OF DETERMINATION A VOICE OF REASONING A VOICE THAT SPEAKS LOUDER INTO THE WORLD SO THAT THE PEOPLE HEAR IT CLEARLY AND I AM THAT VOICE. THERE ARE SELECTIONS IN THIS BOOK THAT WILL BRING ABOUT LAUGHTER AND HOPE AND THEN THERE ARE THOSE ONES THAT WILL BRING ABOUT PAIN AND TEARS. AS THE DAILY LIVES OF AFRIKAN AMERICANS ARE DEFINED THROUGH OUT THIS BOOK ONE CAN’T HELP BUT TO REALIZE A SERIUOSNESS IN OUR CONDITION. EVEN WITH ALL THAT SAID THIS IS NOT A TOOL TO BASH OTHER RACES OR HUMAN LIFES, BUT THIS IS HISTORY, THESE WRITINGS ARE OF PAST AND PRESENT CONDITION, WHERE SOME MAY SEE PIECES LIKE 'GHETTO LIFE' A CELEBRATION OF LIFE IN THE GHETTO, OTHERS MAY SEE IT AS A CRY FOR HELP AND CHANGE. THEN YOU HAVE PIECES LIKE 'HAPPY WITH MY NAPPINESS' WHICH ENCOURAGES BLACK WOMEN TO BE THEMSELVES AND VALUE THEMSELVES HIGHER THAN WHAT TODAYS STANDARD OF A FEMALE IS. JUST TO NAME A FEW BUT TO NOT GIVE IT ALL AWAY, 'GET THEM BABIES OUT THE STREETS' SHOULD BE AMONG THE TOP MOST READ BOOKS OF OUR TIME. I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THE READERS OF THIS BOOK FEEL AS I FEEL ABOUT THESE WRITINGS AND ENJOY THE JOURNEY INTO PAST FUTURE AND PRESENT TIMES.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...
