Fasst man das Krankenhaus als einen Produktionsbetrieb auf, so ist sein Produkt die Gesundheit der Patienten. Dieses Produkt ist jedoch schwer zu erfassen, und entsprechend schwierig ist es, hiefür einen Preis anzugeben. Aus diesem Grund erfolgt die Erfassung der Krankenhausleistung mehr oder weniger inputorientiert. Je mehr Input, desto mehr Leistung. Diese Art der Leistungsbemessung gibt dem Krankenhaus jedoch die Möglichkeit, den Umgang seiner Leistung im Sinne der Einnahmenmaximierung auszudehnen und auf diese Weise die Kosten der Krankenhausleistungen in die Höhe zu treiben. Es gibt verschiedene Vergütungssysteme für Krankenhausleistungen, mit deren Hilfe versucht wird, dieser Gefahr zu begegnen.Dieses Unterthema befasst sich speziell mit dem Vergütungssystem der Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) und den gesundheitsökonomischen Auswirkungen dieses Systems.
