Le separazioni acromioclavicolari sono una delle lesioni alla spalla più comuni osservate nei giovani atleti. Di solito risultano come un colpo diretto alla spalla. Diversi legamenti stabilizzano la clavicola alla scapola. I legamenti acromioclavicolari anteriore, posteriore, inferiore e superiore stabilizzano la clavicola rispetto all’acromion, essendo il legamento superiore il più importante. I legamenti coracoclavicolari, il conoide e il trapezio, sono legamenti forti che stabilizzano la clavicola al processo coracoideo della scapola. Le separazioni sono suddivise in 6 tipi (Rockwood, 1984) e il trattamento viene deciso in base al tipo di separazione.
