Aus dem Vorwort von David Hilbert: 'Entgegen dem ursprünglichen Plan einer vierbändigen Ausgabe meiner Abhandlungen konnte der Abdruck meiner Arbeiten über Analysis, Physik und Grundlagen im Rahmen dieses dritten Bandes erfolgen und mit ihm die Ausgabe abgeschlossen werden. Dies wurde durch Verzicht auf den Abdruck der als Sonderdruck in Buchform veröffentlichten Abhandlungen über Integralgleichungen ermöglicht. Ebenso wurde von der Aufnahme derjenigen Abhandlungen zur Grundlegung der Mathematik, welche bereits als Anhänge in meinem Buch über Grundlagen der Geometrie abgedruckt sind, abgesehen. An Stelle der so entstandenen Lücken haben Herr HELLINGER eine zusammenfassende Darstellung meiner Arbeiten über Integralgleichungstheorie und die daran anschließende Entwicklung, Herr BERNAYS eine solche Darstellung über die Arbeiten zur Grundlegung der Mathematik gegeben. Die Arbeiten über Strahlungstheorie sind in freundlicher Weise von Herrn KRATZER einer Durchsicht unterzogen worden. Der vorliegende Band enthält ferner einen biographischen Aufsatz aus der Feder von Herrn BLUMENTHAL.'
