Le terme gériatrie vient du grec GERON , qui signifie vieil homme , et IATROS , qui signifie guérisseur . Il est apparenté au mot JARA en sanskrit, qui signifie également vieux . La dentisterie gériatrique est la branche de la dentisterie qui met l’accent sur les soins dentaires destinés aux personnes âgées et se concentre sur les patients présentant des changements physiologiques, physiques et/ou psychologiques chroniques ou des affections/maladies morbides. Il s’agit d’une branche multidisciplinaire spécialisée de la dentisterie générale conçue pour fournir des services dentaires aux patients âgés. Un patient gériatrique a besoin de services de santé et d’aide sociale pour atteindre un niveau optimal de fonctionnement physique, psychologique et social. L’objectif de cet ouvrage est de fournir une revue détaillée des maladies parodontales observées chez les personnes âgées dentées et de leur prise en charge, en tenant compte des besoins particuliers de ces personnes âgées, afin de leur offrir des services professionnels, attentifs et bienveillants.
