Nonostante le sue origini egiziane e il ritrovamento di frammenti di trattati di geometria in quella regione del mondo, è a Euclide che va il merito di aver costruito la prima forma di assiomatizzazione dei principi matematici. Con lui, la geometria ha smesso di essere una raccolta di ricette pratiche o, nella migliore delle ipotesi, di affermazioni empiriche, per diventare una scienza razionale. Erede delle geometrie ellenistiche del suo tempo, Euclide le utilizzò a suo vantaggio per realizzare la prima sintesi della geometria. Per oltre due millenni, la geometria euclidea sarà considerata il modello insuperabile nella teoria deduttiva. Tuttavia, in questo saggio, dopo una genesi del sistema euclideo, l’autore osserva che il successo della geometria euclidea è stato messo in discussione quando matematici attenti si sono interrogati sullo status del quinto postulato noto come postulato delle parallele. Lo studio condotto con precisione dall’autore, che unisce rigore filosofico e conoscenze matematiche, presenta quindi un notevole interesse scientifico e sarà sicuramente accolto molto favorevolmente dal pubblico colto.
