This book is the result of research for a monograph to conclude the undergraduate pharmacy course at UFVJM, with an emphasis on pharmacognosy, which describes phytochemical screening for the detection of secondary metabolites in the native Cerrado plant Miconia ferruginata DC. This plant belongs to the Melastomataceae family and is found in several Brazilian states, such as Pará, Sergipe, Tocantins, Bahia, Goiás, and Minas Gerais, and is widely used by the population living in these regions in baths and infusions for the treatment of skin diseases. However, scientific studies on this plant are scarce, which motivated the phytochemical research with it, to facilitate further work on the isolation and evaluation of the biological actions of chemical markers found in the possible classes of secondary metabolites of M. ferruginata (flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids, and hydrolyzable tannins). In addition to the research, the book also provides a brief review of the Miconia genus.
