Lo staff e gli studenti del Dipartimento di Geografia Fisica dell’Università di Amsterdam hanno indagato per oltre 50 anni su temi geoecologici nel Gutland lussemburghese. Questo libro riporta i progressi nella ricerca dei mardel, misteriose forme di terra sull’altopiano del Gutland. Sulla base di inventari geomorfologici convenzionali sul campo, i mardel sono stati classificati come fenomeni geologici, come riportato nelle pubblicazioni precedenti al 2000. Ma i risultati di un inventario attualizzato dei mardel in Lussemburgo e di studi più recenti in Lorena hanno evidenziato la possibilità che si tratti di depressioni chiuse create dall’uomo. Per districare la problematica della genesi naturale o antropica dei mardel, siamo tornati agli archivi del suolo per ulteriori indagini sul terreno e per campionare una selezione di riempimenti di mardel per l’analisi quantitativa dei pollini e per l’analisi archeometrica della provenienza, al fine di collegare la composizione chimica della ceramica romana locale al possibile materiale di partenza come mardel e argilla del suolo. I risultati hanno evidenziato l’esistenza di scavi di argilla in epoca romana per l’industria ceramica locale. Molto probabilmente i Romani iniziarono con l’estrazione dell’argilla in depressioni naturali umide. I mardel fanno parte del patrimonio geologico e culturale.
