Os compósitos de polímeros têm desempenhado, com sucesso, um papel de substituição dos materiais metálicos e cerâmicos. Em várias aplicações, os materiais poliméricos têm sido uma alternativa ao verniz (PMMA, PC) e ao alumínio na aeronáutica, que são substituídos pelos materiais compósitos de matriz polimérica. Os primeiros trabalhos sobre os polímeros extrinsecamente condutores ou sobre os polímeros carregados de partículas condutoras de eletricidade tiveram início nos anos 50 (Hitory of polymeric composites). Nos compósitos de matriz isolante carregada de partículas condutoras, o transporte de corrente eléctrica foi frequentemente cantonado por partículas metálicas ou de grafite. A forma da fase condutora é frequentemente granulosa (noir de carboneto, plaquetas de argila, etc.) ou fibrosa, como as fibras de carboneto, as fibras de alumínio, etc. Os materiais compósitos estruturais são estruturas que utilizam materiais compósitos de elevado desempenho que substituem muitas vezes as estruturas metálicas.
