Gender and Sexuality in Popular Culture features a unique collection of seminal and path-breaking scholarly articles in cultural studies and gender and sexuality studies. Each article is accompanied by a concise introduction that distills key concepts and critical vocabulary. Popular culture genres surveyed include romance novels, animated films, reality television, pornography, advertising, and beauty magazines. Students are given the theoretical tools to engage popular media as dynamic sites of cultural struggle and knowledge production. Discussion questions at the conclusion of each article promote comprehension of difficult ideas and prepare students for classroom conversations. The textbook serves as a valuable learning tool for courses in media and communication studies, cultural studies, women’s and LGBT studies, and composition courses organized thematically around popular culture. Benjamin Bateman received his Ph.D. in English from The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is currently Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities in the College of Arts and Letters at California State University, Los Angeles. His areas of expertise include queer studies, popular culture, literary theory, and modern and contemporary British and American fiction. He resides in Pasadena, California.

The rise of women in the workforce has led to many campaigns for wage equality and the impartial treatment of both sexes as they pursue careers previously designated as either a man’s or a woman’s job. The impact of these campaigns has been felt, but a sense of gender stereotyping still affects not only the social and cultural well-being of the modern organization, but the driv...

'Den feministiska rörelsen lärde kvinnor att se sig själva som offer för förtryckande patriarkat... En självpåtagen offerroll är inte ett recept för lycka', menar den konservativa aktivisten och författaren Phyllis Schalfy och denna tes är genomgående även i denna debattbok. Författaren beskriver här hur kvinnor biologiskt, socialt och evolutionärt fungerar - något som den agen...
  • Language and Gender in the Military
    Edith A. Disler
In the thirty-year history of the study of language and gender, theory and application have branched incrementally like the reaches of a family tree. The study of language and gender has progressed from an eye-opening review of differences between the 'language' of women and men to observations that language served to preserve 'domination' of one sex over another and on to a cr...
  • Online Intersex Communities
    Brian Still
Once referred to as hermaphrodites, intersex persons are born with a sexual anatomy or physiology inconsistent with social expectations of what constitutes a normal male or female. Of course, this definition of intersexuality, like all definitions, is rhetorically charged. In other words, intersexuality does not have meaning in and of itself that can be separated from the cultu...

  • Modernist Art of Queer Survival (UK)
    Benjamin Bateman
Whether we speak of queer bodies targeted for harassment, queer sensibilities derided as dangerous, or queer intimacies denied legitimacy, we acknowledge a close companionship between queerness and precariousness. Queerness remains continuously under threat; these threats to survival can be immediate, as in the AIDS crises, or more subtle and entrenched. Many queer lives thus e...
