In diesem Buch werden die wichtigsten Meinungsverschiedenheiten zwischen den Ökonomen Milton Friedman und Paul Davidson über die Rolle des Geldes und die Durchführung ihrer Geldpolitik untersucht. Ausgangspunkt für diese Analyse ist die faszinierende Debatte zwischen den Autoren, die Anfang der 1970er Jahre über den von Friedman entwickelten theoretischen Rahmen stattfand, der versprach, den Konflikt zwischen klassischen und „keynesianischen' Ökonomen ein für alle Mal zu lösen. Das Ziel der Monetaristen war es zwar, diese Differenzen zu beseitigen, doch wurden sie durch die direkte Debatte zwischen den Autoren noch deutlicher, so dass ein Konsens zwischen ihnen im Sinne der Debatte nicht möglich war. In diesem Sinne schlägt das Buch eine alternative Methode zur Beilegung dieses „Streits' vor, indem es das Argument von Sheila Dow vorstellt, wonach die Unterschiede zwischen den Ökonomen das Ergebnis ihrer unterschiedlichen methodologischen Positionen sind, die implizit die unterschiedlichen „Weltanschauungen' der Autoren widerspiegeln. Diese methodischen Unterschiede sind daher der Schlüssel zum Verständnis, wie Friedman und Davidson zu so gegensätzlichen Ergebnissen in Bezug auf Geld kommen konnten.
