Galileo And His Judges

When Galileo stood before his judges in seventeenth century Italy, the future of European thought seemed to hang in the balance. The drama still feels close. Galileo And His Judges, by F. R. Wegg-Prosser, is a searching galileo trial history book that revisits galileo and the inquisition not as legend, but through careful reading of evidence, motives and misunderstandings on all sides.A convert and lay Catholic scholar, Wegg-Prosser writes a nuanced catholic apologetics book that neither excuses error nor caricatures belief. He probes the workings of the Roman Inquisition, the interplay of personalities and politics, and the fragile new status of natural philosophy, offering rare insight into the catholic church and science at a decisive moment. Part historical essay, part Galileo Galilei biography in miniature, the volume speaks to the science and religion debate with unusual calm and clarity, making it invaluable to history of science students, catholic history researchers, and any reader drawn to roman inquisition history and the making of modern thought. It stands as a compact history of science classic and a notable contribution to catholic church history.Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today’s and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector’s item and a cultural treasure, Galileo And His Judges returns in a finely presented heritage edition for thoughtful readers, scholars, and classic-literature enthusiasts alike.
