A energia renovável refere-se a fontes de energia que se reabastecem naturalmente, como o sol e o vento, e que não se esgotam com o tempo. Esta energia é utilizada para a produção de eletricidade, aquecimento de água e refrigeração, bem como para os transportes. De acordo com um relatório da REN21 de 2016, o consumo global de energia renovável acelerou 19,2 em 2014 e 23,7 em 2015. Em 2015, os investimentos em desenvolvimento sustentável, no valor anual de 286 mil milhões de dólares, incidiram sobretudo nos biocombustíveis, na energia solar, eólica e hidroelétrica. Ao contrário das energias renováveis, este tipo de energia é encontrado em quantidades limitadas, porque leva milhões de anos a formar-se e a regenerar-se a partir de combustíveis fósseis finitos.
