La communication sans fil est le transfert d’informations entre deux ou plusieurs points qui ne sont pas reliés par un conducteur électrique. Les technologies sans fil les plus courantes utilisent la radio. Avec les ondes radio, les distances peuvent être courtes, comme quelques mètres pour la télévision, ou atteindre des milliers, voire des millions de kilomètres pour les communications radio dans l’espace lointain. Elle englobe divers types d’applications fixes, mobiles et portables, notamment les radios bidirectionnelles, les assistants numériques personnels (PDA) et les réseaux sans fil. Parmi les autres exemples d’applications de la technologie radio sans fil, on peut citer les unités GPS, les ouvre-portes de garage, les souris d’ordinateur sans fil, les claviers et les casques, les écouteurs, les récepteurs radio, la télévision par satellite, la télévision radiodiffusée et les téléphones sans fil. La communication sans fil a été développée avec différentes normes pour répondre à diverses exigences et demandes. Ces méthodes peuvent être classées en quatre catégories distinctes en fonction de la portée du réseau et des différentes applications. Il s’agit des réseaux personnels, des réseaux locaux, des réseaux métropolitains et des réseaux sans fil. Les différentes normes de communication sans fil ont été développées pour faciliter les mouvements.
