Negli ultimi decenni, la natura della funzione esecutiva e la sua implementazione neurale sono emerse come una delle questioni più importanti per la comprensione delle funzioni cognitive di ordine superiore. Nonostante il numero consistente di studi sull’argomento, il concetto di funzione esecutiva rimane sfuggente. Lo scopo principale di questo libro è quello di presentare diversi studi neuropsicologici che esaminano il ruolo dei due emisferi in vari processi esecutivi e di memoria, nonché il ruolo delle emozioni legate all’ansia sui processi esecutivi. Riassumendo i risultati di vari studi neuropsicologici, l’autore propone un modello esecutivo integrativo con cinque processi esecutivi distinguibili - Inibizione, Aggiornamento, Commutazione, Monitoraggio e Produzione - con localizzazione neurale diversa nel cervello. Gli esami neuropsicologici presentati nel libro dovrebbero contribuire a far luce sulla complessità delle funzioni esecutive e sulle loro possibili modalità di valutazione o diagnosi differenziale, e dovrebbero risultare particolarmente utili a neuropsicologi, psicologi, scienziati cognitivi e neurologi, nonché a chiunque sia interessato allo studio e allo sviluppo delle funzioni cognitive.
