W latach 50-tych Kurt Tittel opracował model procy mięśniowej, genialne narzędzie do opisywania ruchu sportowego. W modelu tym brakowało jednak odniesienia do metodologii pomiaru. Oryginalność Functional Movement Screen (FMS) polega na możliwości rejestrowania funkcji łańcucha mięśniowego. W szczególności FMS opiera się na założeniu, że odpowiednie wykonanie ruchu (jakość ruchu) i mobilność mogą przyczynić się do minimalizacji obrażeń. Można to wywnioskować z kryteriów oceny, takich jak symetria ruchu i stabilność postawy lub stawów.
