Fun with Action Rhymes and Poems contains 83 delightful new rhymes and poems written by Brenda Williams, a well-known contributor of poems and rhymes to educational magazines and anthologies. They are ideal for use with children in a variety of settings from nurseries and schools to playgroups and mother and toddler groups. The poems and rhymes will help children to foster a love of rhythm and rhyme, which in turn will lay the foundations for understanding patterns in language, music and mathematics. Enjoying the fun of rhymes, hearing the sounds, fitting words to simple actions and experiencing pace, are important factors in creating a sense of beat and rhythm. The rhymes and poems are grouped by common themes used in early years settings in order to provide practitioners with quick and easy access to a suitable rhyme to go with their current topic. To give greater versatility, the rhymes are also linked and cross-referenced not only to other themes within the book, but also to other popular themes. The poems and action rhymes can be used and enjoyed on their own, or used as an informal and natural way to introduce new ideas and discussions. The teachers’ notes provide suggestions on how the rhymes can be used to support learning across the early learning goals. All the action rhymes and poems may be photocopied to enable them to be used for display or during the literacy hour.

The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
