Tras la creación del Protectorado y la Campaña de Melilla de 1909, el ejército español se enfrentaba a un grave problema por la cantidad de bajas que se habían producido en los enfrentamientos contra los rifeños, sumándose las criticas de partidos políticos y opinión pública, es por ello que se deciden crear unidades indígenas que actúen como unidades de choque en punta de vanguardia, para paliar en lo posible el número de bajas de soldados españoles.. El autor intenta hacer un repaso de la historia de una parte de estas fuerzas, centrándose en las Fuerzas Regulares Indígenas de Caballería que sirvieron en Melilla desde su creación en 1911 hasta su disolución en 1958. Esta historia apasionante con datos biográficos e históricos así como anécdotas y curiosidades, está centrada principalmente en dos periodos, en la guerra en el Protectorado entre 1911 y 1927 y en la guerra civil española, sin olvidar periodos intermedios o la postguerra. Su lectura es un apasionante paseo por la actuación de la Caballería Regular de Melilla.
