This story is a product of my imagination but the setting, the mountain village of Poggioreale is not imaginary. It was one of fourteen towns that was destroyed in the Belice earthquake on the southwest coast of Sicily in 1968. In this story, a passionate Sicilian woman has an opportunity to do the impossible. And with the help of her family and numerous other people, she oversees the reconstruction of Poggioreale. It’s a labour of love and a task that is not without its difficulties and, over a period of twenty years, it brings a community together and it brings the village back to life. The original inhabitants of Poggioreale would happily move back in if someone rebuilt their town, but that will never happen. And like Pompeii, it will be forever frozen in time.Florentina Grasso battles bureaucrats and politicians and will not be stopped. Poggioreggio has too many memories to be assigned to the dustbin of history. But Florentina has a secret, a treasure that has been hidden away for centuries. This is a project of the heart, and it’s not long before it attracts the attention of a money-hungry entrepreneur with his eyes on a fortune. He has no idea who he is up against.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
