From Retribution to Restoration

From Retribution to Restoration In a world where the cry for harsher punishment and longer sentences grows ever louder, a quiet revolution is taking place-one that seeks not revenge, but healing; not punishment, but restoration. From Retribution to Restoration offers a comprehensive exploration of restorative justice through the lens of Scripture, psychology, philosophy, and real-world practice. Dr. Maxwell Shimba guides readers through a thorough examination of the traditional punitive paradigm-its ancient roots in the law of retaliation, its psychological appeal, and its devastating consequences on victims, offenders, families, and communities. He then unveils the restorative alternative, a paradigm rooted in the very character of God and modeled perfectly in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, who came not to condemn the world but to reconcile it to Himself. This book tackles the tough questions that every Christian must ask: Why has the current justice system failed? What does the Bible really teach about justice? How can the Church fulfill its clear mandate to minister to prisoners, victims, and their families? Drawing on insights from criminologists, examples from indigenous communities, and the rich tapestry of biblical teaching from Genesis to Revelation, this work builds a compelling case for a different kind of justice-one that prioritizes repairing harm, restoring relationships, and reintegrating both victims and offenders back into the community. Whether you are a pastor, a criminal justice professional, a student, or simply someone who cares about justice and mercy, this book will inform, challenge, and inspire you to join the ministry of reconciliation.
