Freden (Peace) is a comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. First performed in 421 BC, it reflects the longing for peace during the Peloponnesian War. The play follows Trygaeus, an Athenian farmer who, fed up with the ongoing conflict, flies to Mount Olympus on a giant dung beetle to appeal to Zeus. Finding the gods have abandoned Greece due to the Athenians’ and Spartans’ warmongering, Trygaeus, with the help of a chorus of Greeks, rescues Peace (Eirene) from a pit where she has been imprisoned by War (Polemos). The play is a humorous and fantastical appeal for an end to the war and a return to a peaceful, agrarian life. Aristophanes’ work remains relevant for its timeless exploration of the human desire for peace and its satirical commentary on the absurdity of war. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
