Er lernt Sigmund Freud kennen und begeistert sich für dessen Studien zum Un- und Unterbewußten. Gemeinsam mit Hugo von Hofmannsthal gilt er als Kern der Wiener Moderne und ist einer der bedeutendsten Kritiker seiner Zeit. Mit der Novelle Leutnant Gustl führt er den inneren Monolog, die seinen Figuren assoziative Reaktionen auf ihre Umwelt ermöglichen, in die deutsche Literatur ein. Seine Montagetechnik verwebt Klischees und vermeintlich individuelle Reaktionen zu einem überindividuellen Typus. Egoistische Flucht vor Verantwortung und Bindungsängste sind zentrale Themen seines umfangreichen Werkes. Nachdem ihm 1921 nach einem Skandal um seinen Reigen die Aufführungsgenehmigung entzogen wird, ernennt ihn der österreichische PEN-Clubs 1923 zu seinem Präsidenten. Drei Jahre später erhält er den Burgtheaterring und gehört zu den meistgespielten Dramatikern auf deutschen Bühnen als er 1931 in Wien an einer Gehirnblutung stirbt. 3
