Francesco Colonna

'Francesco Colonna' is a captivating bibliographical romance by the celebrated French Romantic author Charles Nodier. In this evocative novella, Nodier explores the life and spiritual passions of the 15th-century Dominican monk who is historically credited with writing the 'Hypnerotomachia Poliphili', one of the most beautiful and mysterious books of the Italian Renaissance.Blending historical fact with imaginative flair, the narrative follows Colonna’s journey through a landscape of architectural wonder and profound longing. Nodier, a renowned bibliophile himself, treats the subject with a deep reverence for the printed word and the artistry of the early press. The story serves not only as a portrait of a scholar-monk but also as a meditation on the nature of obsessive love and the pursuit of classical beauty.Written with the lyrical elegance characteristic of Nodier’s prose, 'Francesco Colonna' is an essential read for those interested in the intersections of literature, history, and the enduring mystery of the Renaissance.
