Le buone proprietà meccaniche e il basso costo delle plastiche petrolchimiche hanno portato all’uso intensivo di plastiche sintetiche di origine petrolchimica negli ultimi anni. Purtroppo la gestione dei rifiuti generati dal loro uso è un problema spinoso. Per rimediare a questo problema si utilizzano diversi modi: il riciclaggio dei polimeri sintetici, l’interramento e/o l’incenerimento di questi ultimi nelle discariche, e l’implementazione di polimeri biodegradabili di sostituzione. Il nostro lavoro si concentra su quest’ultimo modo che protegge l’ambiente. Si tratta di formulare un film plastico biodegradabile per combinazione di biopolimeri chitosano e amido di manioca, essendo quest’ultimo capace di ridurre il costo di produzione del materiale e di migliorare le proprietà del primo e di proporre uno studio di fattibilità tecnica e finanziaria di un’unità di fabbricazione dei film plastici su scala industriale Sono stati fatti diversi studi sulla chitina, che è il polisaccaride più abbondante sulla Terra dopo la cellulosa. Il chitosano deriva dalla deacetilazione della chitina contenuta nei gusci degli artropodi (granchi, ecc.).
