Follow is a sequel to Tex Med and continues the saga of a medical student, John McFarland, who meets opportunities and challenges in Texas and elsewhere in the months prior to America’s entry into the Great War. His girlfriend, Heather, returns as well as several characters from the first novel. Introduced here are many new fictional characters, including John’s cousin, Ted, new Rangers, Native Americans, oil field roustabouts, and bad guys aplenty. New real historical figures are presented who interact with the fictional ones in interesting ways, such as Aimee Semple McPherson, Pancho Villa, Jim Thorpe, D.W. Griffith, and Wyatt Earp. Enjoy. And there’s more to come, for a trilogy is planned to tie everything together.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. This novel started with a conversation I had with my secretary’s husband, Worth Videto, sitting at their kitchen table one evening. Worth shared with me a few examples of small-town medicine from the life of his own grandfather, Dr. James Worth Townsend, of Vandercook Lake, Michigan. Dr. Townsend’s half-century of medicine was very similar to that of my father, Dr. Walter E. Ee...
