All of my life I remember being super sensitive to reports in the media of murders, kidnappings, rapes, child molestations, and even armed robberies - crimes of domination by one person over another. Usually the victim of these crimes is an innocent party rendered vulnerable only due to proximity and chance by someone bent on doing something terrible for no reason. Satisfying some evil internal compulsion. is certainly not a reason.Unfortunately, we, the public have become inured to these repugnant and criminal acts, having been taught from birth that such behavior is simply 'human nature'. We bought into the myth that law and order is not our responsibility, but is best handled by professionals. We came to believe that we need only put yet another lock on our door, and leave the capture, conviction, and confinement of the offenders to the experts. We have been fools and are, in fact, cowards. The standard response by our citizens when someone is injured or killed by some wrong doer is 'thank God it didn’t happen to me'. In fact, in time, there is a good chance 'it' will happen to you. Only family and friends of actual victims come to care, really care, about crime. Unfortunately, by then it is too late. They are left with memories they cannot shake for the rest of their lives. Try as they will, they can never forget the perpetrator’s face and name, his prior criminal history and probably his post criminal history - as most criminals commit many more crimes than the one that finally puts them away. Why, we ask are these people out and about in polite society? And only family and friends of the victim will always remember what happened to him or her; and wonder why such a truly nice person was left unprotected to be murdered, and unavenged. Except for most Police departments, and their dedicated auxiliary volunteers, crime fighting groups such as Adam and MADD, who do a great job nationally, the professionals that we put in charge are much too busy gett
