A baixa disponibilidade de nitrogênio é um dos fatores com maior capacidade de comprometer o crescimento vegetal e a produção agrícola. A fixação biológica de nitrogênio é um processo natural que consiste na utilização do nitrogênio atmosférico (N 2 ) por algumas espécies de bactérias e archea, um grupo seleto de organismos unicelulares e procariotos, que realizam uma reação de redução do N 2 a formas assimiláveis pelas plantas. Os rizóbios representam um grupo de bactérias fixadoras de nitrogênio (FBN) conhecidas pela sua habilidade em disponibilizar N às leguminosas e favorecer o estabelecimento das plantas. A utilização de estirpes eficientes nesse processo favorece a redução do uso de fertilizantes nitrogenados. Dessa forma, este livro, além de ser uma introdução ao fenômeno da FBN, apresenta estudos feitos com isolados bacterianos de espécies de leguminosas arbóreas nativas da caatinga. Descreve o uso de técnicas modernas de biologia molecular e aplicação desses simbiontes em testes de fixação de nitrogênio atmosférico.
