Fire in the Marshes delves into justice and vengeance in medieval Holland through the intertwining lives of three young protagonists: Pieter (Piet), Maarten, and Floris.Piet, a young serf, faces the harshness of feudal society, as his family is trapped by debt and bound to the land of their lord. When Piet’s mother strikes an unusual deal, Piet is thrust into the unfamiliar world of nobility as a page, where he witnesses the complexities of power, chivalry, and social hierarchy.Maarten, a charcoal burner turned soldier with a fierce loyalty to his community, gradually finds himself at odds with the oppressive nobles who view serfs as expendable. As Maarten confronts the injustices around him, he becomes a symbol of resistance against the established order.Floris, the son of a baron, is poised for a life of privilege but struggles with the corruption and brutality of his own family’s rule. Throughout the story, he faces decisions that will determine his loyalty and moral integrity. The lives of Piet, Maarten, and Floris eventually converge in a narrative filled with betrayals, battles, and acts of courage as they each seek to define justice and freedom in a world plagued by rigid social structures and feudal loyalties. Their journeys explore the stark contrasts between serfdom and nobility, loyalty and rebellion, and the personal cost of pursuing a more just society.
