O marxismo é uma defesa da filosofia, do pensamento racional que não se limita a si próprio e não se rende ao egocentrismo positivista. Toda a ciência se baseia em proposições racionais que não podem ser decididas empiricamente. Sem imaginação teórica, sem especulação racional, não há conhecimento científico. A teoria é uma elaboração reflexiva geral das acções ou práticas humanas, também das práticas científicas. A profissão filosófica permite-nos colocar novos problemas, tratar de temas que surgiram nas ciências mas que estas ainda não estão em condições de examinar com os seus instrumentos, tratar da generalização crítico-racional dos resultados de disciplinas particulares, desenvolver critérios heurísticos e é fonte de hipóteses racionais interessantes, que são o fator dinamizador do desenvolvimento do conhecimento, sujeito depois a um possível controlo factual. A tarefa da filosofia, enquanto onto-epistemologia, é contribuir para a criação de condições intelectuais para o desenvolvimento das ciências; formular o sentido geral da investigação, nos seus diferentes níveis.
